Farmed Fish Need To Keep Fit

60-Second Science

Farmed fish don't get the exercise of their wild counterparts, which can make them unfit, prone to illness and less profitable for farmers. Gretchen Cuda Kroen reports.

More 60-Second Science

Subscribe via RSS iTunes

In the wild, salmon, tuna or other active, migrating fish get a lot of exercise. But when these fish are raised in captivity, without predators or the need to fight their way upstream against the current, they turn into fish couch-potatoes.

And not unlike sedentary humans, lethargic fish are more prone to getting sick. As many as 20 percent of farmed salmon die in captivity?apparently, because they?re simply out of shape.?

A new technical book called Swimming Physiology of Fish presents scientific research on how various training routines, water turbulence, diet and even the use of robotic fish as ?swim trainers? can keep captive fish conditioned.

This ?fishical? fitness research has shown that when captive salmon exercise regularly, they grow bigger, have stronger hearts and immune systems, and are healthier than their sedentary brethren. For example, a Norwegian study found that when salmon had to swim against an artificial current they were much less likely to get a common fish virus than their buddies in still water. [Vincente Castro et al, Aerobic training stimulates growth and promotes disease resistance in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar)]

The bottom line? Healthier profits for fish farmers, and healthier fish on your dinner table.

Shuttle Endeavour heading to L.A. to retire: why some neighbors are ruffled

In the logistical maneuvering to move space shuttle Endeavour the 12 miles from Los Angeles airport to the California Science Center downtown, 395 street trees will come down. Frustration abounds.

By Gloria Goodale,?Staff writer / September 20, 2012

A large crowd takes photographs of the Space Shuttle Endeavour sitting atop NASA's 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft at Ellington Field in Houston on Wednesday, Sept. 19. Endeavour will spend the night in Houston before continuing its journey from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida to the California Science Center in Los Angeles where it will be on permanent display.

Space shuttle Endeavour is being cheered as it soars cross-country into a Tinseltown retirement, but here in Los Angeles the ex-NASA behemoth is getting a cool reception from some of its future neighbors.

That?s because the job of transporting a 172,000-pound, five-story-high, 78-foot-wide space artifact is, well, a mighty endeavor. And some 395 Los Angeles trees are being forced to give up their place in the sun to make way for its 12-mile trek in October from the Los Angeles airport to its new home at the California Science Center (CSC) in downtown.

Endeavour, which flew 25 space missions before being grounded, is scheduled to land in Los Angeles midday Friday.

Despite months of intensive planning and a $200 million price tag for a five-year plan to house and promote the shuttle at the CSC, officials were still meeting with local residents Monday, the day the shuttle was initially supposed to depart the Kennedy Space Center (but was delayed because of weather). Behind closed doors, talks were conducted over such issues as how many trees may need to be removed from neighborhoods for the shuttle as it passes at 2 miles per hour through city streets.

In a statement following the rancorous meeting, even as residents continued to voice disappointment to local media, CSC president Jeffrey Rudolph said, ?We are pleased that we are on track to move the Endeavour to the Science Center, where it can deliver substantial educational and economic benefits to the South Los Angeles community and the state of California.?

He noted that the center plans to move forward with a newly revised tree replacement program, which, he says, ?will improve the streetscape in the South Los Angeles, Westchester, and Inglewood communities with nearly 1,000 new trees.?

The original plan, which had included a 2-for-1 tree replacement offer, has now been raised to more than 3-for-1. The tree replacement program follows CSC efforts over the years to create a park and landscaping that beautifies the neighborhood and provides recreational space for wide usage, Mr. Rudolph says.

According to the CSC, more than half the trees already had been scheduled for removal to enhance airport security or to make way for a Metro construction project, and another 20 are ?environmentally unfriendly? trees that are damaging sidewalks and streets.

The new trees will be between 10 and 14 feet tall, and they will reach approximately the same size as most of the trees they are replacing in about two to five years. The CSC will also provide free maintenance.

Nonetheless, residents continue to voice their frustrations with the manner in which the shuttle arrival has been handled. How things went shows that when city officials want something, they will find a way, even if the plan has seemingly insurmountable hurdles ? in this case, hundreds of mature trees, says Los Angeles activist and blogger Jasmyne Cannick.

Before the city ?decided to chop down the trees and change the landscape of the city, it should have asked the people who were going to be affected by the changes instead of moving forward and going back and making amends after the damage is done,? she says via e-mail. Too often, she continues, ?this is how business is conducted when it comes to certain communities.?

However, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has been ebullient in his support.

?Los Angeles is a world-class city that deserves an out-of-this-world-attraction like the Endeavour,? he said in a statement, adding, ?We welcome the shuttle with open arms.?

From a national perspective, Washington-based media strategist Brendan Kownacki suggests that environmental concerns are secondary to the symbols of goals Americans cherish, such as space exploration. ?This is a great symbol of what we are capable of doing,? he says. If there?s any doubt about the value Americans place on manned spaceflight, he says, look no further than the tributes after the recent passing of astronaut Neil Armstrong. ?We gave him a hero?s send-off,? he says.

While saying he is deeply saddened by the loss of any mature trees, Edward Devinney, professor of astronomy and astrophysics at Villanova University in Pennsylvania, says, "Still, this is an amazing device and says a lot about what we can do.?

The object itself is important, he adds, for the simple fact that ?people will look at it and say, this is really impressive that we were able to put that up there.?

AJAX Web Apps In iOS 6 Are Sort Of Broken

safari-ios6-loadingI noticed some odd behavior in mobile Safari on iOS 6, and while I thought it to be just a minor quibble on my part, it turns out that it's actually something of a notable bug, now affecting web developers targeting the platform. The problem I noticed is that little, spinning loading indicator (or whatever you call it) at the top of mobile Safari which tells you when a site has finished loading all its parts. On some websites, that little guy just runs and runs, never completing, as if there's still more to load. Kind of annoying, right? Well, apparently, it's not just a little annoying to picky users like me - it's annoying developers too. It's related to a bug which impacts how websites function, and is causing some web apps to not work properly.

Advocacy Group Requests Worldwide Ban On Asbestos ...

We have all heard the implications and horrible diseases related to Asbestos exposure. The biggest of these diseases is cancer, more specifically, Mesothelioma. This is cancer of the mesothelium, which is the tissue that surrounds and protects most of the organs in the body. Often times, it is the lining of the lungs that gets harmed the most by Asbestos, and this is called Pleural Mesothelioma.

It has been proven that Asbestos exposure is the primary cause of Mesothelioma. In a majority of the cases, this occurs when Asbestos fibers are inhaled into the lungs. The tiny, needle-like fibers sit in the lungs and cause irritation and festering. Eventually, this leads to tumors in the lining of the lungs. It is believed that as little as one small exposure to Asbestos can lead to this condition up to 40 years after the fact. Considering that it takes such limited exposure to cause this horrific disease, advocacy groups are requesting that the Asbestos mineral be banned globally.

Asbestos is a mineral that is mined in various parts of the world. In developed countries, it is not used much anymore because of the potential hazards involved. However, many developing countries still import Asbestos regularly, because it is a cheap building material. In many places throughout the world, it is still used in roof shingles, insulation, and building compounds, as well as in break pads and even some household items.

The advocacy group National Asbestos Helpline (NAH), which originated in Britain, is requesting a worldwide ban on the product. In part, this is due to the fact that Great Britain has the highest number of Mesothelioma cases, per capita, in the world. In Great Britain, the huge housing boom happened in the 40?s, 50?s, and 60?s, which is when Asbestos was hugely popular as a product used to build housing structures. This has caused a huge amount of Asbestos exposure to people young and old. Thus, Mesothelioma has become a huge problem in this country.

Joining the fight to stop the use of Asbestos globally are the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization in America (ADAO) and the British Lung Foundation (BLF). The goal of these organizations is to get a minimum of one-thousand pictures and signatures of people who have been harmed by Asbestos exposure. These pictures and signatures, along with some stories, will be used to make a book that will give these horrible Asbestos related diseases a face. The hope is that this will have enough of an impact to shut down the production and use of Asbestos throughout the world. The fact is that thousands of people die each year from diseases related to Asbestos exposure, and the numbers continue to grow!

Wal-Mart will stop selling Amazon.com Kindles

(AP) ? Wal-Mart Stores is phasing out selling Amazon.com's Kindle tablet and e-readers, the world's largest retailer said Thursday.

Wal-Mart says the decision was made as part of its overall merchandising strategy to offer a broad assortment of products at low prices. Wal-Mart Stores will continue to sell a range of tablets and e-book readers, including Apple's iPad, the Barnes & Noble's Nook, and devices from Samsung, Sony and others.

The move echoes Target Corp.'s decision to stop offering the Kindle in May after selling it for two years following a merchandise review.

Wal-Mart spokeswoman Sarah Spencer says the Bentonville, Ark., company will continue to sell its existing inventory of Kindles until it is depleted.

Amazon.com, based in Seattle, declined to comment.

Extreme temperatures may raise risk of premature cardiovascular death

ScienceDaily (Sep. 17, 2012) ? Extreme temperatures during heat waves and cold spells may increase the risk of premature cardiovascular disease (CVD) death, according to new research in Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes, anAmerican Heart Association journal.

The study in Brisbane, Australia, is the first in which researchers examined the association between daily average temperature and "years of life lost" due to CVD. Years of life lost measures premature death by estimating years of life lost according to average life expectancy.

The findings are important because of how the body responds to temperate extremes, the growing obesity trend and Earth's climate changes, said Cunrui Huang, M.Med., M.S.P.H., the study's lead researcher and a Ph.D. scholar at the School of Public Health and Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation at Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Brisbane, Australia.

Exposure to extreme temperatures can trigger changes in blood pressure, blood thickness, cholesterol and heart rate, according to previous research.

"With increasing rates of obesity and related conditions, including diabetes, more people will be vulnerable to extreme temperatures and that could increase the future disease burden of extreme temperatures," Huang said.

Researchers collected data on daily temperatures in Brisbane, Australia between 1996 and 2004 and compared them to documented cardiovascular-related deaths for the same period.

Brisbane has hot, humid summers and mild, dry winters. The average daily mean temperature was 68.9 degrees Fahrenheit (20.5 degrees Celsius), with the coldest 1 percent of days (53 ?F /11.7 ?C) characterized as cold spells and the hottest 1 percent (84.5?F/ 29.2 ?C ) heat waves.

Per 1 million people, 72 years of life were lost per day due to CVD, researchers said.

Risk of premature CVD death rose more when extreme heat was sustained for two or more days, researchers found.

"This might be because people become exhausted due to the sustained strain on their cardiovascular systems without relief, or health systems become overstretched and ambulances take longer to reach emergency cases," said Adrian G. Barnett, Ph.D., co-author of the study and associate professor of biostatistics at QUT. "We suspect that people take better protective actions during prolonged cold weather, which might be why we did not find as great a risk of CVD during cold spells."

Spending a few hours daily in a temperate environment can help reduce heat- and cold-related illnesses and deaths, Barnett said.

Researcher acknowledged that the findings may not apply to other communities and that they only considered deaths where CVD was the underlying cause.

How To Transform Your Business's Image With Branding

Posted on September 19th, 2012 Web Doctor

If you know how to utilize branding strategies, you can give your business any image you desire. The idea is to get people to associate your business with a certain need, desire or problem that you can solve. If your brand doesn?t interest or inspire people, it will not have the desired effect. It?s easy to create a brand message that is weak or does not appeal to the right emotions. So avoid assuming that brand creation can be done without solid knowledge of your market audience. It?s also essential to identify something unique that makes your product different from the competition.

There are various ways to strengthen your brand and increase its influence on the marketplace. One of the most common methods is new product creation because this will expand the reach of your brand. You may also consider licensing out popular product that you?ve already released. Joint ventures can be profitable and help you popularize your brand, though it has to be with the right company. Be as creative as possible and try to think of innovative tactics that could bring more name recognition for your brand. When you want to create a brand for a new company, take all the time you need. Successful branding will be permanent and there?s no going back once it?s done. When you brand your company or product, you don?t always have to emphasize a particular benefit. Quite a few famous brands are recognized for things like jingles, clever names or logos. Some branding campaigns evoke certain moods or feelings in the consumer. So people feel like they are buying this spirit or feeling when they buy the product. The most successful commercials on television or newspaper and online ads make use of this technique all the time.

Remember that branding isn?t a one-time action but something that has to be worked on continually. The promises you make when you market or advertise your business are fundamental to your brand name. Staying true to your marketing promises and guarantees is essential if you want to create a brand name that keeps growing. In addition, any services and support expected after the sale must be delivered.

And remember the quality of post-sales support cannot be second rate. Don?t think people will overlook it if you break your promises because they won?t. Keeping your promises in every way is the only way to build up your brand name. Whatever your marketing, your products and services, should get equal time to how much you market your brand to potential customers. Without a doubt, you promote your products, you also promote your brand. There are methods designed to spread brand awareness. They should be utilized just like marketing and advertising strategies. These are the activities that are more like investing in your brand because each campaign should build equity. You can build brand awareness by attending or sponsoring charities of some sort. So look around and find out what you can do in your local area and get involved. By reading this affiliateproductbuzz.com, you will learn the latest tactics and techniques for your SEO and backlinking efforts.

Video teaches how to survive workplace shooting

By Eun Kyung Kim, TODAY contributor

Children are taught to ?stop, drop and roll? if their clothing ever catches fire. Now some authorities want adults to "run, hide and fight? if they?re ever at work when a gunman opens fire.

In an eerie video funded by the Department of Homeland Security, experts offer advice on what safely could be considered a worst-case scenario at the workplace.

"It may feel like just another day at the office, but occasionally, life feels more like an action movie,? intones the narrator as workers are seen holding meetings, making copies, taking coffee breaks or working in solitude within their cubicles.

Suddenly, a man dressed in black and wearing sunglasses takes a shotgun from his backpack and begins blasting away, starting with a security guard standing next to the elevator. (The video is a dramatization, but may be disturbing.)

This six-minute training video was made for $200,000 in federal grant money.

The video, nearly six minutes long, was produced by the city of Houston with money from a federal grant.

?In particular, we wanted to address those early moments, when an individual has the best opportunity to save himself,? said Dennis Storemski, director of Houston?s Office of Public Safety and Homeland Security.

While the frightening video may bring to mind recent attacks on a Sikh temple in Wisconsin and movie theater in Colorado, Storemski said the producers had a different model in mind:?the 2008 chain of attacks in Mumbai, India, that killed 166 people.

The video promotes a simple, three-step plan to escape danger:

  1. Run. Always try to escape if possible, even if others insist on staying behind.
  2. Hide. If you can?t escape, conceal yourself. Lock doors, turn off the lights and silence your cell phone.
  3. Fight. As a last resort, prepare to battle or throw off the attacker, using a chair, metal trash can, fire extinguisher or whatever else can be turned as a weapon.

Funding for the $200,000 video came from a $3.6 million grant Houston received from the Department of Homeland Security. The video was made in May and became available just days before the deadly July 20 Aurora, Colo., movie theater attack that killed 12 and injured 58.

Nicole Stickel, a spokeswoman for the DHS, said money came from a program funding "law enforcement and terrorism prevention activities, like training videos."

The department offers similar advice in booklet form, without the frightening visuals.

Storemski said the response to the ?Run, Hide, Fight? video has been overwhelmingly positive. The video has received more than 1.3 million hits on YouTube and has been shared with police jurisdictions throughout the country. DVD requests also have come in from as far as Germany, Japan and Australia.

However, the video has been criticized over its advice to fight back if necessary. But some security experts say that choice makes sense.

?We used to say cooperate with the robber or whoever is harming you, but the paradigm has shifted,? said Vernon Herron, senior policy analyst for the Center of Health and Homeland Security at the University of Maryland. ?If someone has in their mind that they want to shoot and injure and kill as many people as possible, cooperating with somebody like that is not going to help.?

French court opens criminal probe over topless Kate photos

PARIS (Reuters) - A French court opened a criminal investigation on Tuesday into charges that photographers and France's Closer magazine breached the privacy of Britain's Prince William and his wife, the Duchess of Cambridge, by publishing topless photos of her.

In a scandal that has incensed much of the British public and rekindled a debate on privacy laws, lawyers for the royal couple are seeking damages from the weekly gossip magazine over its publication of the photos in a five-page spread on Friday.

The court in Nanterre, near Paris, said it would investigate whether there are grounds for criminal charges against Closer, published by Italy's Mondadori, and the paparazzi who snapped pictures of the Duchess from a distance while she sunbathed topless with William at a villa in southern France.

The couple have also launched a civil suit against Closer over the photos, which show the former Kate Middleton slipping off her bikini top, relaxing on a sun lounger and at one point pulling down the back of her bikini bottoms.

Buckingham Palace has called the photo spread a "grotesque" invasion of the royal couple's privacy.

British newspapers, fighting for their reputation after a string of scandals, have agreed not to publish the images, as has the British edition of Closer which is managed separately, and instead are condemning the photographer.

The Sun tabloid screamed: "Find Le Rat" on its front page on Tuesday and said the photographer would be hunted down and faced jail.

On Monday, the publisher of tabloid The Irish Daily Star suspended its editor after the newspaper broke ranks with Irish and British peers, publishing pages from Closer with the photographs in its Saturday edition.
