Japan minister visits nuke plant amid safety worry

TOKYO (AP) - Japan's environment and nuclear minister visited the tsunami-crippled Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant on Saturday to inspect a spent fuel pool at the center of safety concerns and said it appeared to have been properly reinforced.

The visit by Goshi Hosono, apparently aimed at demonstrating the safety of the facility, came amid renewed concerns about conditions at the plant's No. 4 reactor after its operator reported a bulging of the building's wall. Nuclear regulators ordered a new investigation and seismic tests of the building and its pool.

The building was damaged by an explosion and fire soon after the Fukushima plant was hit by a massive magnitude-9.0 earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011. The pool, located at the top of the building above the reactor, remains one of the plant's biggest risks due to its vulnerability to earthquakes.

The plant's operator, Tokyo Electric Power Co., has reinforced the structure and says it now can withstand temblors as strong as last year's quake.

A small group of journalists was allowed to enter the reactor building for the first time with Hosono. Inside were piles of broken wall panels, pieces of cement and mangled equipment, showing the magnitude of the explosion.

Hosono, wearing protective coveralls and a full-face mask, climbed a narrow makeshift staircase to the fifth floor to see the pool, which was covered with a protective tarp. TEPCO officials lifted part of the cover to show the water surface.

He said he was not able to see the newly found 3 centimeter (1 inch) outward bulge in the building's wall with his own eyes, but urged TEPCO "not to take an optimistic view and instead deal with it carefully in order to ensure safety."

Hosono later told reporters that he could see that the pool had been sufficiently reinforced.

"I could see steady progress being made toward removal of the spent fuel (from the pool), which is the next major goal," he said.

The fuel rods in the storage pool are not enclosed as they are in reactor cores and could cause a greater release of radiation in case of a loss of water.

TEPCO is preparing to move the fuel rods from the pool to a joint pool for all six reactors next to the building, but the process won't start until late next year. The joint pool is located on the ground level and is considered safer, even though it already has 6,000 fuel rods in it, officials said. It is expected to take 40 years to decommission the reactors.

Akio Komori, one of the TEPCO executives who escorted Hosono, said the company will inspect the No. 4 building to ensure its integrity while continuing with the fuel removal. Komori, however, rejected growing calls to allow outside experts to inspect the plant's safety.

"As the party with direct responsibility, it's our job to carry out the necessary checks," he said.

From early on, experts have raised concerns about the pool at the No. 4 reactor, where 1,535 fuel rods - the most of any of Fukushima's six reactors - were stored because the reactor was undergoing major refurbishing and the fuel ordinarily inside its core was also kept in the pool.

U.S. nuclear officials feared the fuel rods would overheat and melt as water evaporated from the pool.

The pool had enough water to cover the rods, but officials recently said they might have been saved by chance.

When the disaster struck, two additional pools next to the fuel storage pool had been temporarily filled with water to store equipment used during the refurbishing. That water flowed into the fuel rod pool as its water level declined, though it's not clear whether the rods would have been exposed otherwise, Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency official Masaru Kobayashi said.

A worst-case scenario envisioned by the head of the Japan Atomic Energy Commission two weeks after last year's accident warned that a melting of the fuel rods at the No. 4 reactor would require the evacuation of 30 million people just from the greater Tokyo area.

This nest is feathered with cash | The Retiring Boomer?

When the Baby Boomer generation left home, they didn?t look back. They couldn?t. Not with younger siblings and physically smaller living quarters.

But a change in family dynamics, coupled with the economic deck stacked against many young adults, means that modern twenty-somethings now are likely to return to the nest at some point, which can impact the retirement plans of their Boomer parents.

?Children are taking longer to leave home, they are staying in school longer if they don?t have immediate employment prospects or opportunities, taking longer to find stable jobs, longer to get married, longer to have kids,? Daryl Diamond, financial planner and author of Your Retirement Income Blueprint 2011.

Mr. Diamond said a gritty job market and costly rental housing sends those who have recently finished post-secondary school back to their childhood bedrooms.

On top of the added grocery and utility costs of having another person in the dwelling, parents are chipping in with the children?s cell-phone bills, car expenses, and debt, according to Barbara Mitchell, a professor of sociology and gerontology at Vancouver?s Simon Fraser University.

?Especially with middle-class type parents, there is sort of this mentality that to be a good parent you need to care for every need of your child,? Ms. Mitchell said.

Ms. Mitchell conducted a recent study of roughly 500 families in the Vancouver area who had children aged 18-35 living at home. Eighty-five per cent were living at home for economic reasons and one quarter of those were in ?dire? debt situations, Ms. Mitchell said, with which parents feel obligated to help.

It is also a characteristic of the boomer generation to feel the need to keep up with their neighbours, said Ms. Mitchell. ?We are raising children within a society, whereby there are certain standards that we see in other families that everyone is trying to keep up with the Jones? kind of thing.?

The willingness to continue support can come at personal financial cost.?Continue reading??

Coda Automotive names Mr. Electric preferred EV charging station ...

May 25, 2012 - Mr. Electric, an electric service and repair company, has been selected by Coda Automotive, a developer of all-electric vehicles, as its preferred provider of electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) installation services. With nearly 20 years of experience and established service networks in Canada and the United States, Mr. Electric intends to offer complete consultation and installation services for Coda Automotive customers. ?We?re proud to add Coda Automotive to our growing list of systems accounts,? said Jeff Meyers, president of Mr. Electric.??Our first priority is always the customer.?We are confident our franchises will be able to provide reliability and professionalism to help make the process of going electric a reality for Coda drivers.?

Coda Automotive customers will work with their dealer to set up an assessment appointment through Mr. Electric. After the home consultation, Mr. Electric can handle all necessary permits and conduct the installation of the EVSE. Mr. Electric is already deeply involved in EVSE installation.

?We?re excited to work with Mr. Electric to make the process of going electric an easy and a true reality for Coda EV drivers,? said Thomas Hausch, senior vice president of sales, marketing and aftersales. ?With the company?s deep experience in EVSE installations and nearly 200 locations, selecting Mr. Electric as our preferred installation partner was a natural choice.?

Available at Coda showrooms across California, the 2012 Coda claims to be the first all-electric five-passenger, compact sedan with full rear seating and trunk space, providing a range of up to 125 miles.

?As more people grab for the EV charger ? and not the gas pump ? home charging becomes an important part of their daily lives,? said Meyers. ?We are thrilled to work with Coda Automotive, its dealers and customers to bring EV charging to garages throughout California and beyond.?

Primi immagini reali di Windows Phone Tango su Nokia Lumia 800? [AGGIORNAMENTO]

For something so simple, pasta is serious business

ROME (AP) ? They twirled, they sniffed, they slurped, they chewed.

The dozen housewives who gathered in a Rome hotel on a recent afternoon took their work terribly seriously, rating plates of pasta for chewiness, saltiness, gumminess or done-ness ? that perfect balance known as "al dente," or firm to the bite.

Pasta is serious business in Italy, and the recent blind taste test organized by the world's biggest pasta maker drove home that an awful lot of thought goes into making the simple combination of durum wheat semolina and water from which Italy's national dish is made.

"The simpler it is, the more testing it takes," said Stefania Fochi, in charge of consumer testing for market leader Barilla, which organized the taste test.

Pasta sales worldwide have grown steadily over the past three years, to ?22.3 billion ($28 billion) last year, according to Euromonitor research. In Italy, however, sales have fallen steadily over that same timeframe as the economy suffers and stores are forced to offer discounts. National pasta sales dropped to ?2.7 billion ($3.4 billion) last year from ?3.1 billion ($3.9 billion) in 2009 ? meaning spaghetti makers in these days of austerity need to try harder to keep their customers loyal.

Granted, in Italy, it's not a huge challenge given that most Italians eat a plate of pasta ? be it spaghetti alla carbonara, penne al ragu or orecchiette with broccoli ? at least once a day. But they are terribly discerning customers: A noodle is not just a noodle.

"Some were sticky, some were good, al dente and cooked the right amount of time," said Stefania De Rossi, a 46-year-old mother of three who was selected for the taste test because of her family's daily pasta habit. "I liked the last one (identified only by its code name: V36). It wasn't super smooth, it was a bit rough but seemed better."

Her pickiness stems in part from Italians' particular obsession with food: Eating in Italy is taken very seriously on both a family and cultural level. The Slow Food movement was born here and you can smell, see and taste this way of life at this time of year in outdoor markets, exploding with bundles of fresh asparagus now that the green and purple hills of artichokes have begun to wane.

And what better way to enjoy those asparagus tips than to sautee them in olive oil with bits of speck, a smoky cut of prosciutto, and toss the whole thing with a small mound of linguine?

"Pasta is truly the symbol, the emblem not just of Italian food ... but the principal plate of the Mediterranean diet," said Amelia Germoleo, vice director of the National Pasta Museum in Rome. "It's profoundly rooted in the culture, the lifestyle, the 'being' of Italy."

The museum, which is currently closed for renovations, seeks to enlighten visitors about pasta's past, including the very Italian origins of dried pasta, the stuff that comes in packages and can be preserved, as opposed to egg-based fresh pasta that must be eaten quickly.

It turns out Marco Polo didn't bring spaghetti to the West from China. Rather, Germoleo said, the earliest known origins of dried pasta date from 12th century Sicily. The Norman king of Sicily, King Ruggero II, instructed a geographer to write a book about all that was known of the world.

In 1138, the geographer, Idrisi, reported back that the settlement of Trabia, west of Palermo, was making a type of vermicelli that was "sufficient to provide not only for Calabria but also the Muslim and Christian territories, where numerous cargoes are sent by sea," according a citation of the book in a museum publication, "Time for Pasta."

"This debunks the myth that Marco Polo brought it from China," Germoleo said. "Dried pasta is absolutely Italian."

Agostino Macri, a food security expert at the National Consumer's Union, said that pasta was in the "genome of Italians."

"A good dish of pasta puts you in a good mood," he said. But he cautioned against going overboard in consuming it, particularly with specialties like spaghetti all'amatriciana, a heavy dish using tomatoes and bacon-like pancetta that is common on Roman trattoria menus.

"It has a lot of calories," he warned.

The pasta that was served to the blind tasters had none of that: simply spaghetti tossed with a dash of olive oil. Each of the five brands tested ? Barilla, De Cecco, Gragnano and supermarket brands Coop and Conad ? was cooked in 1 liter of water salted with 7 grams of sea salt for every 100 grams of pasta.

While each sample cooked, women in white lab coats and latex gloves handed out small packets of noodles as they appear in the package, giving the whole affair a sterile, clinical feel when most Italians would tuck into a plate of pasta around the dinner table.

The testers ran their fingers slowly over the slender sticks, caressed them, noted the flecks of brown on the golden strands of semolina and the slight roughness of the grain in their hands. And then they answered an 11-page questionnaire asking them how the color, thickness, smell, taste and texture appealed to them. The results aren't for public consumption, Barilla said.

"For us the pasta is very important, especially for me," Gabriella Brescia said after sampling her five dishes as she packed up and headed home. "I could give up everything except pasta."

Facebook Is Building The Facebook Phone Right ... - Business Insider

One of the many points of intrigue around Facebook's future centers on the mobile phone market.

It has been reportedly working on a mobile operating system for its own phone since 2010. The original OS was shelved, then a new team came in, and worked on it again.

As of late, the reporting on the phone has died down.

But, right in plain view Facebook is assembling the core applications needed for successful smartphone operating system.

This week it rolled out "Facebook Camera." Every smartphone needs a camera application. Facebook's camera app, which has some filters and loads straight to Facebook would check that box. (It's also about to own Instagram, which is a pretty good camera app in its own right.)

It has a "Facebook Messages" application. This would be Facebook's answer to BBM, iMessage, or even text messages.

It has a Facebook app store. This would be its answer to the App Store, or Google Play.

And it's reportedly interested in buying Opera. If it is going to have a mobile OS, it's going to need a web browser. Apple has Safari, Google has Chrome, Amazon has Silk, and Microsoft has Internet Explorer.

Other core apps like contacts and a calendar are already baked into Facebook. The only biggie that's missing is Maps. Facebook is close with Microsoft, so it could probably get a Bing-based mapping app.

We don't know when, or even if, Facebook will actually release a phone. But, if it does happen, it will have had plenty of experience figuring out the basic applications every smartphone needs to be successful.
