The Importance of Renewable Energy in the 2012 Election (ContributorNetwork)

The fate of renewable energy might be hanging in the balance, according to Forbes. The solar powered failure at Solyndra and the battle over natural gas drilling and the process of fracking are expected to be hot topics during the 2012 presidential election.

The number of investors for alternative energy sources are unable to keep up with the requests for cash, according to Forbes. The anticipated shale boom in Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia are already garnering positive and negative national attention. Drilling supporters tout the number of gas industry jobs already created in Pennsylvania, while opponents fearful of water contamination protest fracking, according to the Associated Press.

Ohioans shared their thoughts on the importance of renewable energy issues in the 2012 election via email, instant messaging and Twitter.

* "I think that the natural gas industry will be a lifesaver for Ohio and will not vote for anyone willing to kill the project just to attempt to appease the far-left. President (Barack) Obama had been silent on the issue until the 11th hour, until he decided the protests would cost him votes. The delay in drilling in Wayne National Forest is all about politics and has very, very little to do with environmental protection." -- Roger Nelson, retired electrician, Nelsonville.

* "President Obama has let us all down a lot on environmental issues. There have been a lot of broken promises. He needs to do the right thing no on renewable energy issues if he wants to earn the student vote again." -- Rondell Jefferson, Ohio University graduate student, Athens.

* "Fracking scares me more than a little bit, but I hope those in charge of deciding whether or not the natural gas industry becomes a major force in Ohio are basing their decisions on safety and not politics. As an independent, I want to hear what all the candidates have to say about alternative energy and shale drilling before making up my mind." -- Sarah Lawson, massage therapist, Worthington.

* "We do not need to be spending more taxpayer money on grants to solar and wind power companies. No matter how much money liberals push into the development of solar panels, unless they are affordable and there is private demand, they companies will continue to fold just like Solyndra. I want America to become energy independent and will support a candidate who can accomplish that task in a fiscally responsible and safe manner." -- Steve Conrad, small business owner, Coolville.

* "President Obama has done a lot for the environment. Not as much as I would have liked, but there is not a single Republican who would even attempt half of what he has done. Taxing the top 1 percent will provide more funds for renewable energy research and help companies trying to survive in the struggling economy created by Bush." -- Rashawna Eastman, Ohio State University graduate student, Columbus.

NFL: Giants thrash Falcons 24-2 to set up Packers clash

updated 12:12

Published: 10:34AM Monday January 09, 2012 Source: Reuters

The New York Giants used a ferocious defense and a second-half scoring surge to rout the Atlanta Falcons 24-2 in the National Football League (NFL) wild card playoffs today.

The Giants, who went into intermission with a 7-2 lead, used a surprisingly strong running attack to control the ball and broke open a tight battle with two second-half touchdown strikes by quarterback Eli Manning.

"That's a big win today," Manning said. "Defense played awesome. Second half the offense finally got going. We ran the ball and started hitting some big plays, so a great win today."

Manning connected with Hakeem Nicks for a 72-yard touchdown in the third quarter and then dropped in a perfect 27-yard toss to Mario Manningham as he sprinted into the end zone to pull away from the Falcons in the fourth quarter. He also hit Nicks for a four-yard TD late in the first half.

"They won the battle of the line of scrimmage and that was one of the musts we had to accomplish and didn't get accomplished today," said Falcons coach Mike Smith.

The victory lifted the Giants to a divisional-round clash on the road against the defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers (15-1) on January 15.

New York battled the then-unbeaten Packers in a tight struggle before falling 38-35 to them in December in their only regular season meeting against Green Bay.

The Giants, who ranked last in the NFL in rushing during the regular season, rediscovered their running game against Atlanta as Brandon Jacobs (92 yards) and Ahmad Bradshaw (63) gouged the Falcons on the ground. New York gained 172 yards rushing, nearly twice their regular season average.

"We're a very balanced offense," said Nicks, who gained 115 yards on six receptions. "We can run the ball when we want to. We were just clicking on all cylinders today."

New York's defense, which ranked 25th in the NFL in giving up an average of 25 points a game, continued a late-season rally launched by back-to-back, crucial season-ending wins against the New York Jets and Dallas Cowboys.

The Giants limited Atlanta to just 64 yards rushing on 21 carries, sacked Atlanta quarterback Matt Ryan twice, pressured him throughout and did not give up a point on defense.

"We played outstanding defense and that set the tone for everything else that happened in the game," said Giants coach Tom Coughlin. "If we can continue to play defense like that, we can make ourselves heard in this tournament."

'Huge challenge'

Atlanta put their only points on the board when Manning was called for intentional grounding in the end zone while in the grasp of a blitzing James Sanders that resulted in a safety early in the second quarter.

New York went on to score 24 unanswered points.

Twice the Giants stopped Atlanta on fourth-and-one attempts by snuffing quarterback sneaks by Ryan late in the first quarter and again in the third quarter.

"It's nothing flashy, but it's as solid a bunch as anyone else in the league," defensive end Justin Tuck said about the Giants' interior defensive line.

Defensive captain Tuck said the Giants defense, revitalized by the return of injured defensive end Osi Umenyiora, linebacker Michael Boley and safety Kenny Phillips, was peaking at the right time.

"It feels good to have a good stand on defense because we are going to need it up there in Green Bay," Tuck said. "It's another huge challenge for us and we are looking forward to it."

One possible setback for the Giants defense, however, came late in the game when cornerback Aaron Ross was sidelined with a concussion after a collision with team mate Jason Pierre-Paul.

'Driving America' exhibit overhauls Henry Ford Museum

DEARBORN, Mich. ? The suburban Detroit museum founded by auto pioneer Henry Ford is revamping its automotive displays, offering a fresh look at its rich collection and showcasing the enormous influence of the automobile on culture and daily life in the United States.

Driving America opens to the public Jan. 29 following a year of construction at Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn. It features some of the most significant cars ever built, from early production vehicles to modern rides, and examines how automobiles shape the nation.

"It is an exhibition that resonates with us all and will challenge us to think differently about what we drive," Patricia Mooradian, president of The Henry Ford, said in a statement.

The 80,000-square-foot permanent exhibit includes 130 vehicles and more than 60 cases of artifacts. Touchscreen displays will offer access to images, videos and oral histories, as well as allow visitors to explore parts of the museum's collection that aren't on display.

People will be able to create a custom collection that can be accessed later via a smartphone or computer.

Driving America replaces the museum's old Automobile in American Life exhibit, which closed in early 2011 to make way for construction. It sits between Henry Ford Museum's collection of trains and its Heroes of the Sky exhibit, which documents aviation's early years.

Walking through the Driving America displays, visitors will see muscle cars, race cars, trucks, sport-utility vehicles and luxury cars. Sections look at auto repair, design, safety and marketing, as well as auto-related offshoots such as the road trip.

It will offer a look at cars through the eyes of people who use them - and those who don't, said Bob Casey, senior curator of transportation for The Henry Ford.

"Visitors will be asked to think about what attracted them to automobiles in the first place," Casey said. "How have their definitions of style or luxury changed over time? How have their attitudes towards safety, or recreation or environmental costs changed?"

Lamy's Diner, a piece of roadside history that previously was a popular stop at the museum, also is getting a makeover ahead of the Driving America debut. Those who stop by the 1946 diner now will get the chance to eat diner-style food inside, not just walk through.

The diner, built by the Worcester Lunch Car Co., operated for years as a restaurant in Massachusetts, according to a curator's account of its history. The museum bought it in the 1980s, moved it to Michigan and spent years restoring it to its original appearance for display.

The cost of building Driving America hasn't been released. Visiting the exhibit is included in museum admission.

Henry Ford Museum is part of The Henry Ford, a history attraction that includes Greenfield Village. A future exhibit also is in the works titled Racing in America, focusing on innovation in American auto racing and the behind-the-scenes culture of the sport.

Plans for Racing in America were announced in 2010 and fundraising continues. One section of Driving America will highlight the planned racing exhibit and include some cars from the museum's collection that will be part of that eventual display.

Baseball: Ichiro welcomes Iwakuma to Seattle

Monday, Jan. 9, 2012

Kobe ? Ichiro Suzuki welcomed Hisashi Iwakuma to the Seattle Mariners with open arms Sunday, saying the right-hander's addition to the team was a "pleasant surprise."

"Playing behind him in right (field) at the WBC, I thought he was the easiest pitcher to play defense for," Ichiro said after working out for two hours as the 38-year-old Seattle veteran tries to rebound from his worst season in the majors.

"I never thought I'd be playing on the same team with him so this has been a pleasant surprise."

Ichiro and Iwakuma, whose one-year contract with the Mariners was announced Friday, played together on Japan's World Baseball Classic-winning team in 2009.

Free agent shortstop Munenori Kawasaki, who was also member of the 2009 WBC team, could be joining Iwakuma and Ichiro, having been invited by the Mariners to spring training.

"I look forward to the day that the three of us including (Kawasaki) can be on the field together," Ichiro said.

Fashion legends put stamp on suites, hotels

Courtesy Hotel Notre Dame

Each room of Le Notre Dame in Paris is decorated in an eclectic medieval-meets-modern fashion, with carpets that are meant to resemble paving stones, faux cowhide wallpaper, exposed beams and period artwork on the walls.

By Amanda Pressner, Departures.com

Among the world?s most celebrated fashion designers, there are those whose collections are so iconic and truly transformative that, given the opportunity, you would choose to live in their creations. Now, thanks to an emerging trend in travel, you can ? by simply making a reservation.

Over the past few years, a growing number of international style arbiters, from Christian Lacroix and Armani to Missoni and Dior, have been teaming up with high-end resorts and hotels to put their distinctive stamp on properties around the globe.

Slideshow: Top fashion designer hotels and suites

Some, like Diane Von Furstenberg and Oscar De La Renta, were tapped to rework the d?cor of a suite or series of rooms at a single property, while others have gone so far as to partner with major developers to launch eponymous hotel brands that span from Australia to South America to the Middle East.

These ultra-chic living spaces reflect the fashion brands? unique personalities and exemplify the way that they themselves would choose to travel and live. For example, the Bottega Veneta St. Regis Hotel suite in Rome features a sophisticated, neutral palate. ?We wanted to respect the character of the hotel and acknowledge the light of Rome through Bottega Veneta colors, materials and furniture,? said Tomas Maier, the brand?s creative director.

In each of these runway-ready locales, it?s not simply the linens on the bed or fabric upholstered onto the settees that subtly (and, in the case of Missoni, perhaps not so subtly) speaks the designer?s name. It?s also the branded amenities in the bathroom, commissioned artwork on the walls and an array of quirky signature services that evoke an idealized ? and always stylish ? travel lifestyle.

Even when you aren?t living out of a carry-on, it can be an ongoing challenge to keep ahead of the trends. Fortunately, these ten properties make it infinitely easier to stay in style ? even if you never leave your hotel room.
