Obama may lose gay voters to Gary Johnson in 2012 (Daily Caller)

Former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson announced Wednesday that he will run for president as a Libertarian Party candidate in 2012. He will almost certainly be the only presidential candidate on the ballot in all 50 states supporting the legalization of same-sex marriage.

Johnson?s support for same-sex marriage, and President Barack Obama?s opposition to it, could put the support and votes of gay Americans in play during the election.

Lt. Dan Choi, who was discharged from the military under the ?Don?t Ask, Don?t Tell? policy, told The Daily Caller, ?I am not in the habit of endorsing candidates and I no longer belong to any party, but I hold Governor Johnson in highest regards and think he would be an amazing president.?

Choi, who has declared in the past that he won?t vote for Obama again, ?called Johnson ?a patriot, a hero, a fighter and a friend. I salute him proudly and wish him the very best in his campaign.?

GOProud executive director Jimmy LaSalvia similarly indicated that gay voters may consider voting for Johnson.

?Gov. Johnson may very well attract gay voters because of his position on same-sex civil marriage, but I think that everyone on the ballot in November is going to give Obama a run for his money,? said LaSalvia.

Republican presidential candidate Fred Karger, currently running as the first openly gay man seeking a major party?s nomination, said that he is sticking with the GOP, but does find Johnson appealing as a candidate.

?I am a huge Gary Johnson fan and consider him a friend, but I am staying in the Republican Party and will fight for change from within,? said Karger.

Johnson is himself aware of that his position on same-sex marriage may pull votes away from the major party candidates, particularly from President Obama.

?I?m the only one advocating for marriage equality,? Johnson told The Daily Caller. ?If I were gay, that would really be an important issue for me.?

Johnson added, ?What I?m being asked right now is, ?Aren?t you going to ensure Obama?s re-election???

?I may well take more votes from Obama because of gay rights,? he conceded, but also ?because of the war, because of the war on drugs, you can really go down the list.?

The Human Rights Campaign, a large gay rights organization based in Washington, D.C., has already?endorsed Obama?s re-election bid. The group?s offices are closed for the holidays, so it was unable to comment on whether the endorsement will be reconsidered.

Choi said HRC members??should reconsider their purpose vis a vis the gay movement. If we are to play second fiddle to any one political party, our rights will always be relegated to the back of the DNC bus,? he said.

?It?s one thing to talk about the issues, and it?s another thing to look at the resume and decide: Is he going to hang with what he says?? Johnson mused. ?And everything about my resume says I?m going to hang with what I?m saying.?

Mark Zuckerberg vacations in Vietnam, Facebook not welcome

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg

(Credit: Justin Sullivan/Getty Images) (CBS) -? His company may not be welcome there, but that didn't stop Facebook's chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg from spending Christmas in Vietnam.

Zuckerberg and his girlfriend Priscilla Chan arrived in the Southeast Asian country on Dec. 22 on a two-week visa.

Vietnam Net reports, "[Zuckerberg] and his group of nine members spent a night on the Ha Long Bay, which has been recognized as one of the new natural wonders of the world. The Facebook's CEO rowed a kayak himself to make an excursion on the bay and then visited some caves of the bay."

Full coverage of Facebook at Tech Talk

According to the Associated Press, "Zuckerberg spent Christmas Eve in the popular tourist destination Ha Long Bay, local official Trinh Dang Thanh says."

The visit raises questions of whether or not this trip mixes business with pleasure. Vietnam is a communist country that censors Internet usage, blocking its citizens from accessing Facebook. However, Vietnam Net claims there are 4 million Vietnamese citizens that have found a way onto the social network.

While it seems like Zuckerberg is relaxing, it's no secret that the young CEO wants Facebook to be welcome in communist countries, like China and Vietnam.

As a matter of fact, it was this time last year that Zuckerberg and Chan paid a visit to China. That trip included a meeting with Robin Li, the chief executive officer of popular Chinese social network Baidu.

There is no evidence that Zuckerberg is meeting with any Vietnamese officials while on vacation, but he did meet with web entrepreneur Nguyen Trong Khoa, who has been called the "tycoon of domain names" in Vietnam.

Facebook was co-founded by Zuckerberg in 2004. The world's biggest social network currently has 800 million active users.

Samsung GT-N8010 is the next-gen Galaxy Note?

Well what do you know ? even though the Galaxy Note is still not available all over the globe, Samsung is already working on its successor. At least that?s what we think of the mysterious device marked as GT-N8010, which has recently received a Wi-Fi interoperability certificate (PDF download is here).

So why do we think the GT-N8010 has anything to do with the Galaxy Note? Well, the Note?s model number is GT-N7000 and as far as we know ? it was the only newer Samsung device which model number starts with N.

Unfortunately, we don?t have any additional details except that it?s Wi-Fi ready. If I had to guess, there will be a quad-core processor under the hood, as well as LTE radio in select markets (where LTE is available). Putting an even higher resolution display doesn?t make much sense when you think about it.

We?ll definitely be looking where this goes and let you know as soon as we hear something new. Stay tuned in the meantime, k?

A year of promise

A Christian Science perspective.

With what we?ve seen of weather disasters, economic problems, and difficulties in our cities, there are likely many of us who would say, ?Good riddance!? to 2011. But let?s not forget some of the good news, such as the encouraging stirrings and revolutions for democracy that we?re seeing in some countries. There are also studies indicating that violence is generally decreasing in tangible ways. And in the debates and protests around the globe, I have been struck by the tremendous heart evident in people.

In light of such things, along with what hopes we still have within us, maybe we can begin to see in this past year something of the promise of good that?s already here. Sure, hope isn?t enough to help someone recover after a disaster. But let?s consider where things can go when we see our lives from the standpoint that our divine Creator is profoundly good and has a wonderful order of His universe for us to discover in whatever country and village we find ourselves.

This year has had its challenges for me, including financial challenges. But it then recently occurred to me that I was overly swayed by the bad news going on ? and not swayed enough by the promise of what I was able to discover of God?s good to help us all. This realization was a powerful turning point for me, from which I went forward and found ways to make a difference in my year and, I would like to think, in the lives of those around me.

It?s in this spirit that I?ve thought of the past year as ?really having been full of promise. A God-based view of things makes all the difference. It?s this spiritual lens that enables us to stay above the fray, harvest the good of the present, and so best prepare for tomorrow. Christ Jesus said: ?Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest? (John 4:35).

Are we waiting for good to come along from somewhere else? Are we focused on ways we haven?t seen the good we want? Or rather, are we trying to see more of the good that God has already provided ? goodness that is ready for us to spread in our world?

Truly, the good that?s in store for us is not something that?s yet to be created. It?s ready for us to see. Life was not created for us to step and stumble through alone. Neither was it created for us to petition God for a random blessing. We are witnesses of God?s infinite good.

Sure, maybe it feels more like we?re witnesses in training, since the way doesn?t always seem clear. But a God-centered view leads us to more good. We need only to follow it. The founder of the Monitor, Mary Baker Eddy, wrote: ?The conscientious are successful. They follow faithfully; through evil or through good report, they work on to the achievement of good; by patience, they inherit the promise? (?Miscellaneous Writings 1883-1896,? p. 340).

We?re learning about what works in life, and maybe plenty about what doesn?t work, and there?s enough going on to suggest that we?ll continue to gain in our role as witnesses to God?s infinite glory. So let?s keep on looking to the light.
