How to find out who unfriended you on Facebook

By Rosa Golijan

We've shown you?how to try?Facebook's new profile page???also known as?the "Timeline"???right now, but did you know that it's more than just a pretty design? It can be used to find out exactly which of your friends quietly unfriended you at some point.

This clever trick was discovered by the folks at Buzzfeed (who we hear skipped work to spend the whole day playing around with Timelines) and it's pretty simple.

All you have to do after enabling Timeline on your Facebook account?is pick a random year and scroll down until you find a "Friends" box.

Facebook

Once you've found one of those boxes, click on the "Made [some number] New Friends" text.

You'll see a little pop-up with a list of the friends you made at that particular point in time. If you're still friends with a person, the button next to his or her name will say "Friends." But if you're not? Then the button will say "Add Friend" instead.

Busted!

Facebook

Of course it's worth noting that the people who have an "Add Friend" button might not have unfriended you?? instead they might've been the victims of your friend list purge.

The Role of SEO And Sem in Business Online | top-web-site-pills.info

Many journalists, writers and ?gurus? on the internet would have you believe that search engine optimization (SEO) is free. However this is not true. Whilst it need not be expensive, putting SEO into action in the right way will at the very least take time and you will need to put in a lot of effort. With that in mind, SEO done properly will deliver much greater benefits, consistently and over a a lot longer term than you will get through alternative search engine marketing (SEM) and other online advertising tactics.

When your site is getting ?free? visitors and traffic from organic search engine results, and links on other websites, there is less need (in many cases no need) to spend additional money on pay per click advertising. SEO done properly therefore, will help to cut costs. PPC and other marketing campaigns only deliver results whilst you are paying the provider. SEO on the other hand, works long after you stop investing in it, provided that it is content-centric SEO.

For many sites on tight budgets (perhaps all of them?), correct and effective SEO can make the difference between success and failure. Due to this, it really is worth spending some time and effort in the research and development stages of your website, to build SEO into the DNA of the site?s design and architecture. This will pay for itself over and over again.

Including SEO from the beginning and as a core part of your online strategy will make everything else easier in the long run. When your web designers, your technical team, and your marketing department include SEO in all their decision making, the rewards you will reap from SEO will be many times greater than if you only try to implement SEO as an afterthought.

Below is a summary of the advantages and disadvantages of PPC and other search engine marketing efforts.

PPC Advantages:

* Can provide instant traffic from the second you launch the campaign

* Is easier to implement, with most search engines providing you platforms

* Is easier to manage because you can simply turn it off and on

PPC Disadvantages:

* Can get very expensive very quickly, particularly for expensive or popular keywords with low conversion rates

* In placements, the top positions will go to those advertisers paying the most

* There is not as much trust in PPC compared to organic results

* Once you stop paying, the traffic stops coming

SEO Advantages:

* Can be much cheaper to start

* The benefits are more longer term and sustainable

* Helps to increase trust for your website and brand

* The click through rate is often higher than with PPC

* The growth in your website traffic will be more natural, and reliant on your site?s content

SEO Disadvantages:

* Getting the initial results can take a bit of time

* It takes brain power, and effort to do it right

* It comes with no guarantees.

Whilst it is true that SEO comes with no guarantees on your search engine placements, all SEO effort can *improve* your rankings, making certain that you get more traffic than you would have done without SEO. Finally, SEO has been proven to work over and over again, which is more than can be said for many alternative marketing strategies you will find people hawking on the internet.

Garage Doors for Smaller ... - Icon Bud Home Improvement Sites

People are making their homes smaller and in these smaller homes they tend to keep their garages as compact as they can to increase the living space. This trend is new and in the past there was no door type which can be adjusted in smaller garage entrances. Sectional garage doors in Pittsburgh are perfect for these entrances because they do not need any extra space for opening and closing. They use a drum rolling mechanism for opening and closing which resides in the ceiling right above the garage door?s head. So you can make your garage entrance as compact as you want and then install sectional doors in that entrance.

Typhoon slows Tokyo commute, grazes nuke plant

A powerful typhoon slammed into Japan on Wednesday, leaving 13 people dead or missing in south-central regions and halting trains in Tokyo before grazing a crippled nuclear plant in the tsunami-ravaged northeast.

Officials at the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant, where engineers are still struggling with small radiation leaks due to tsunami damage, expressed relief that Typhoon Roke's driving winds and rains caused no immediate problems there other than a broken security camera.

"The worst seems to be over," said Takeo Iwamoto, spokesman for plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co., after the storm passed just west of the plant and then headed north.

More than 200,000 households in central Japan were without electricity late Wednesday. Police and local media reported 13 people dead or missing in southern and central regions, many of them believed swept away by rivers swollen with rains.

The storm, packing sustained winds of up to 100 mph, made landfall in the early afternoon near the city of Hamamatsu, about 125 miles west of Tokyo. The fast-moving storm went past the capital in the evening and then headed into the Tohoku region, which was devastated by the March 11 earthquak tsunami.

In Tokyo, where many rush hour commuter trains were suspended, thousands of commuters trying to rush home were stuck at stations across the sprawling city.

"The hotels in the vicinity are all booked up, so I'm waiting for the bullet train to restart," Hiromu Harada, a 60-year-old businessman, said dejectedly at Tokyo Station.

Fire department officials reported three people injured in Tokyo. In the trendy shopping district of Shibuya, winds knocked a tree onto a sidewalk, but no one was hurt. Pedestrians struggled to walk straight in powerful winds that made umbrellas useless.

At the Fukushima plant, engineers are still working to stabilize the reactors six months after three of them melted down when the tsunami disabled the plant's power and back-up generators.

Iwamoto said the storm passed without damaging the reactors' cooling systems, which are crucial to keeping them under control. However, a closed-circuit camera that shows exteriors of the reactor buildings abruptly stopped, and plant workers were investigating, he said.

Workers were trying to prevent pools of contaminated water from flooding and leaking outside the complex, said Junichi Matsumoto, another power company spokesman.

"The contaminated water levels have been rising, and we are watching the situation very closely to make sure it stays there," Matsumoto told reporters.

As the storm headed further into the north, it triggered landslides in parts of Miyagi state that already were hit by the March disasters. Some 2,500 people, including 472 quake and tsunami survivors living in shelters in the town of Onagawa, were ordered to evacuate due to fear of flooding. The local government requested the help of defense troops. Dozens of schools canceled classes.

The disaster-struck region had a chilling reminder of its earlier disasters when a magnitude-5.3 earthquake struck late Wednesday just south of Fukushima in the Ibaraki state. Officials said the temblor posed no danger to the plant, and that it did not cause any damage or injuries in the region.

Heavy rains prompted floods and caused road damage earlier in dozens of locations in Nagoya and several other cities, the Aichi prefectural (state) government said.

Parts of Japan's central city of Nagoya, about 170 miles west of Tokyo, were flooded near swollen rivers where rescue workers helped residents evacuate in rubber boats.

Police in nearby Gifu prefecture said a 9-year-old boy and an 84-year-old man were missing after apparently falling into swollen rivers.

More than 200 domestic flights were canceled and some bullet train services were suspended.

Toyota Motor Corp., Japan's No. 1 automaker, shut down its plants as a precaution.

Machinery maker Mitsubishi Heavy Industries told workers at its five plants to stay home, company spokesman Hideo Ikuno said.

Nissan Motor Co. spokesman Chris Keeffe said workers at its Yokohama headquarters and nearby technical facilities were being told to go home early for safety reasons, and that two plants were not operating.

A typhoon that slammed Japan earlier this month left about 90 people dead or missing.

The Lenovo Files ? ThinkPad Tablet Inspires ?Ah-Ha? Moment for ...

Stephen Landry?became?Seton Hall?University?s first CIO in 1997. As CIO, he was instrumental in implementing Seton Hall?s mobile computing initiative. Before that, he was a faculty member in the department of mathematics and computer science and served as one of the co-chairs for the university?s strategic planning committee. He received his PhD in mathematics from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, in 1989.

Two things about Seton Hall University I have always appreciated are its commitment to quality teaching and its willingness to explore ways technology can improve student learning.? So in 1993 as a new faculty member, I joined with colleagues in the Mathematics and Natural Sciences departments to integrate the use of symbolic algebra software into the curriculum.? I was impressed with how this software enabled students to easily visualize difficult mathematical concepts.? Colleagues in Business, Communications, English and Modern Languages, were similarly exploring technology-enabled learning innovation.? The ?Ah-Ha? moment was when we all recognized that computers and information technology amplified the power of our minds, just as physical machines can amplify the power of our muscles. We knew we had to make the power of technology available to our students.

The challenge at the time was how?? The projects my colleagues and I were working on didn?t scale.? There weren?t enough computers or labs to accommodate what the faculty wanted to do with their classes.? In 1996, the University?s strategic planning team wrestled with this issue and came up with an innovative solution: every undergraduate student would be provided a laptop computer as part of their tuition and fees.? In 1998, we launched our Mobile Computing Program and chose the ThinkPad as the standard device for all students and faculty.? Some aspects of the program were controversial at the time.? Why laptops, for example, when desktop computers where more powerful and less expensive?? The simple answer is that we valued mobility; recognizing that students often resemble academic nomads, constantly on the move between departments and buildings, taking advantage of whatever opportunities there were for studying, whether it was in the classroom,? library, cafeteria, or at home.

The combination of laptops, networks, online services, and professional support propelled an unprecedented burst of faculty creativity; and students reported that the technology and resources provided vastly improved the campus learning environment.? In the 11 years since we launched the Mobile Computing Program the definition of ?mobile? has changed dramatically.?

In order to continue to innovate in teaching and learning, the University is exploring supplementing students? laptops with a new tablet device, the Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet.? This fall we are distributing approximately 400 ThinkPad Tablets to faculty and students in our Business Leadership Program, Honors Program, and the mathematics and physical sciences departments.? Faculty have identified course sections where all students will have a ThinkPad Tablet in addition to their ThinkPad laptop and are working with our Teaching, Learning and Technology Center to develop course activities and curricular materials that make use of this new technology.?

Seton Hall University Students Check Out New Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet

Seton Hall University Students Check Out New Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet

This project is still very much in its infancy, and we have much to learn. Does this new form factor change how students and faculty use technology inside and outside of the classroom? Will the tablet eventually replace the laptop in the same way the laptop replaced the desktop?? What apps can we acquire or develop that will improve teaching and learning for our faculty and students?? I expect to have more insights into these issues in the next few months, but most importantly, I expect to see another burst of creativity on the part of Seton Hall?s faculty and students as they explore the new ways of teaching and learning the ThinkPad Tablets will support.

Retro Nintendo 64 Star Wars Tie Fighter Game? | Bit Rebels

Nintendo 64 Tie Fighter Console

Since we love retro video games, we often write about them on Bit Rebels. My very first memory of playing a video game was when my father bought me an Atari. I sat in my hot pink bean bag chair and played Frogger all summer long. I was so fascinated with it, and it never got old.

I can remember playing video games for many years after I had my first Atari console. The video game arcades in the ?80s will always hold a special place in my heart. It?s nostalgic to think how valuable a quarter was back then. As we?ve always seen, the world of gaming moves super fast, and I was somehow able to talk my father into buying me a new console each time one came out. I specifically remember the Nintendo 64 because I got one around the same time I graduated from University.

Like any self-respecting geek, I remember spending many afternoons in Princess Peach?s castle on Super Mario 64 instead of putting together a resume and looking for a ?real? job. Thank goodness Atlanta hosted the Olympics that year, and I was able to snag a job there. Now I could make enough money to buy my next console, which if I remember right was a PS2.

What are your earliest memories of playing video games? I think Richard asked this same question when he wrote The Evolution Of Video Game Controllers: Version 2.0. It?s fun to share those memories since, for gaming geeks like us, the different games throughout our lives form a timeline of special memories. Etsy member Kevin Glenn (CorellianCustoms) has managed to go where no other man has gone before. He?s combined my two loves, retro gaming and Star Wars, into one badass one-of-a-kind tie fighter Nintendo 64 console. You can learn more about how he made this, and even purchase it for $175 in his Etsy store.

Solar lasers not just for James Bond villains

Harnessing the sun's rays to produce a beam of pure energy has long been the goal of inventors from the ancient Greek engineer Archimedes (focused mirrors to destroy invading ships) to James Bond villains (space-based lasers of "Diamonds are Forever" and "Die Another Day").

But new research may realize the dream for a more down-to-Earth use: renewable energy.

A researcher in Uzbekistan has proposed a plan using small parabolic mirrors about 3 feet in diameter, combined with new two-layer ceramic disks to produce laser light.

"It is possible to make solar-powered lasers with the efficiency of 30 to 40 percent," said Shermakhamat Payziyev, a researcher at the Scientific and Production Association "Akadempribor" in Tashkent.

Payziyet said his proposal is a step beyond a similar project unveiled by Japanese researchers in 2007 which used a glass Fresnel lens instead of mirrors to create a laser to combust magnesium found in seawater.

Payziyet says his plan, published this month in the Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy, would use the sun's energy to create a laser to power electric cells.

"We proposed an idea how to convert effectively the solar light into the laser," Payziyet said. "In principle it can be converted into electricity by using concentrating photovoltaic modules with the efficiency of about 50 percent or closer to 100 percent in the near future."

Solar-powered lasers already exist on an experimental basis. But there have always been two major issues: removing the heat generated by the mirrors and the converting one kind of power to another efficiently.

Payziyet's unit tackles both.

When sunlight hits the ceramic material, it excites the electrons and causes them to emit laser light of a specific wavelength. To control the heat, the ceramic disk would be mounted atop a heat sink through which water would be pumped. The laser light would then take another reflective bounce through the ceramic surface, which produces an extra amount of efficiency, Payziyet said.

Sounds cool, but the project does have some doubters.

Eli Yablonovich, professor of electrical engineering and computer sciences at the University of California at Berkeley and director of the NSF's Center for Energy Efficient Electronics Science, wrote a paper about unfocused solar powered lasers back in 1983. He says focused lasers haven't really worked out.

"They don't solve any useful problems," Yablonovich in an email. Laser energy from the sun "can be directed into a solar cell, but the added complexity is not worth it."

Yablonovich believes that advanced solar collectors are a better bang for the energy-collecting buck and co-founded Alta Devices, a Silicon Valley firm which is making high-efficiency photovoltaic solar cells.

Despite the obstacles, Payziyet says his proposed solar-powered laser will get off the ground. He says it can be used to synthesize industrial quantities of nano-particles and nano-powders used to manufacture composite materials, superconductors, solar batteries and advanced paints or coatings.

He works at the site of the world's largest solar furnace, known as the Big Solar Furnace in Uzbekistan. It sounds like a bad guy's lair, but Payziyev says he's no Bond villain out to create a death ray.

"It is obvious that any new idea will be considered regarding its use in military purposes at first, but I am not supporter of this bad idea," he said. "The solar laser is a promising way in the use of renewable energy as an ultimate energy source for peaceful purposes."
