Surface RT - Three reasons Microsoft tablet might not work for ...

When Microsoft unveiled its Surface tablet earlier this year, it looked impressive, but left us with few details. This week, Microsoft began taking pre-orders for the device that will be available as of October 26. As anxious as some are to get a hold of the new Windows RT tablet, though, there are a few good reasons businesses might think twice.

At face value, a Windows-based device engineered by Microsoft would seem to be a slam dunk for businesses considering tablets. However, Windows RT is a different animal than Windows 8. It relies strictly on the Modern (formerly known as Metro) UI with its colourful tiles, and it can only use apps acquired from the Windows Store.

In both hardware and software, the Surface RT is a bit closer to rival tablet platforms like iOS and Android, and a bit less like the traditional Windows operating system. Still, it comes with Office apps pre-installed, and it could still be a viable mobile productivity tool for businesses.

There are three serious caveats to consider, though.

1. Not for Commercial Use

Paul Thurrott, a prominent expert on Windows, pointed out that the licence for Office 2013 Home & Student 2013 RT allows only for non-commercial use just like the PC version. That means that even though the Surface RT tablet comes with the Office apps pre-installed, the tablet cant actually be used for business productivity out of the box.

Thurrott explains that it isn't entirely true that the Office 2013 Home & Student 2013 RT apps can't be used for business. Microsoft has clarified that customers simply need to buy the standard Office 2013 licence, and that allows them to also legally use the Office RT apps for commercial use.

That is a workaround, but basically means the Office RT apps that come pre-installed can only be used for business productivity if you also subscribe to Office 365, or invest additional money to buy the full PC version as well.

2. No Outlook

Another problem with the Surface RT when it comes to business use is that the Microsoft Office tool that is probably the most widely used of the entire suite is absent from the RT apps - Outlook. Many companies rely on Microsoft Outlook for email, calendar, and contacts, and the integration with Microsoft Exchange helps IT admins manage it all.

The Mail, People, and Calendar apps in Windows RT perform similar functions. These apps can integrate with Exchange using Exchange ActiveSync, but lack the consistent look and feel of Outlook that users are accustomed to, and fall short of delivering all of the capabilities users expect from Outlook.

3. Cant join a domain

Another issue that might deter some businesses is the fact that Windows RT can't join a traditional Windows network domain. Granted, neither can iOS or Android tablets, so this isnt exactly an Earth-shattering deal breaker as far as tablets go.

There are two things to consider, though, when it comes to the ability of a business to manage its tablets. First, is to consider the options available. There are many mobile device management (MDM) platform options that can provide some control over iOS and Android, and Apple has made significant strides over the years to make iOS more manageable through Exchange ActiveSync. Windows RT probably has similar capabilities available through Exchange ActiveSync.

The other option is to hold out for Windows 8 Pro tablets. Windows 8 Pro tablets have standard Intel or AMD processors like those in desktops and laptops, and they're capable of running the full Windows 8 operating system. That means they can use all of the same software, and connect to a domain to be managed through Active Directory and Group Policy just like any other Windows 8 PC.

The caveat here is that Windows 8 Pro tablets will most likely cost significantly more than the Surface RT, so you sort of get what you pay for.

Overall, the Surface RT still seems like it has potential. But, businesses that are chomping at the bit to get their hands on one should be aware of these limitations before investing in the new tablet.

Health Department names facilities that got NECC products | al.com

MONTGOMERY, Alabama -- The Alabama Department of Public Health has released a list of Alabama health care facilities that received medications from a pharmacy associated with a fungal meningitis outbreak.

None of the medications shipped to Alabama by the New England Compounding Center are known to be infection causing or have proven to be tainted. However, the facilities and their patients are being notified out of an abundance of caution, state health officials said.

"Alabama health care facilities have had very limited exposure to NECC products, but individuals who have had certain medical procedures using these specific products are being notified," State Health Officer Don Williamson said.

"If you have had adverse reactions, contact your health care provider," Williamson said.

?The facilities are being asked to contact their patients if an NECC product was used on them after May 21.

The types of procedures where the drugs might have been used are back injections for pain, eye surgery, joint injections and types of heart surgery.

People who received NECC products are asked to watch for symptoms of infection for three months. Symptoms of fungal meningitis include headache, fever, sensitivity to light, stiff neck, new weakness or numbness, slurred speech, increased pain and redness or swelling at your injection site.

Symptoms of joint infections are fever, increased pain, redness and warmth or swelling at the injection site.

Nineteen Alabama residents have been exposed to contaminated steroids made by NECC, but Williamson said they were exposed during medical procedures performed in Tennessee and Florida.

The facilities that received NECC products are:

Sources: Review finds no proof that firm spied for China

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A White House-ordered review of security risks posed by suppliers to U.S. telecommunications companies found no clear evidence that Huawei Technologies Ltd had spied for China, two people familiar with the probe told Reuters.

Instead, those leading the 18-month review concluded early this year that relying on Huawei, the world's second-largest maker of networking gear, was risky for other reasons, such as the presence of vulnerabilities that hackers could exploit.

These previously unreported findings support parts of a landmark U.S. congressional report last week that warned against allowing Chinese companies Huawei and ZTE Corp to supply critical telecom infrastructure.

But they may douse speculation that Huawei has been caught spying for China.

Some questions remain unanswered. For example, it is unclear if security vulnerabilities found in Huawei equipment were placed there deliberately. It is also not clear whether any critical new intelligence emerged after the inquiry ended.

"The White House has not conducted any classified inquiry that resulted in clearing any telecom equipment supplier," White House National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said. She also noted that Huawei had been barred from participating in an emergency network for first responders a year ago "due to U.S. government national security concerns."

At the White House's direction, according to people familiar with the matter, intelligence agencies and other departments conducted the largely classified inquiry, delving into reports of suspicious activity and asking detailed questions of nearly 1,000 telecom equipment buyers.

"We knew certain parts of government really wanted" evidence of active spying, said one of the people, who requested anonymity. "We would have found it if it were there."

A spokesman for Huawei said the company was not familiar with the review but it was not surprised that no evidence of Huawei espionage was found.

Last week's report from the Republican and Democratic leaders of the House Intelligence Committee noted the potential for spying through Huawei gear installed to manage traffic on wireless networks. The committee also criticized Huawei's leadership for failing to provide details about its relationships with Chinese government agencies.

Huawei, whose chief executive officer, Ren Zhengfei, founded it 25 years ago after he was laid off by the Chinese army, has rejected the House report as unfair and inaccurate. China's Commerce Ministry has also called the accusations "groundless."

"Huawei is a $32 billion independent multinational that would not jeopardize its success or the integrity of its customers' networks for any government or third party. Ever," the company's U.S. spokesman, Bill Plummer, said on Wednesday.

The House Intelligence Committee's report did not present concrete evidence that either Huawei or ZTE has stolen U.S. data, although it said a classified annex provided "significantly more information adding to the committee's concerns" about the risk to the United States.

Speculation has swirled about the contents of the secret annex, and both committee Chairman Mike Rogers and some intelligence officials have hinted at evidence that Huawei has participated in espionage.

Rogers, the report's lead author, stoked concerns by saying some customers had seen routers sending off "very valuable data" to China.

But in the one case a committee staff member pointed out to Reuters, the victim - Leap Wireless International Inc - said that while some of its computers were infected with viruses earlier this year, an investigation found no evidence that the infection was deliberate or that confidential data had been stolen.

PREVENTIVE MEASURES

Pressed about why the White House review and unclassified version of the House Intelligence Committee report had not turned up a "smoking gun," two officials familiar with intelligence assessments said U.S. agencies were most concerned about the capability for future spying or sabotage.

Similarly, Chris Johnson, a former CIA analyst on China, said he had been told that the White House review had come up empty on past malicious acts. Nonetheless, officials emerged from the review with "a general sense of foreboding" about what would happen if China asked Huawei for assistance in gathering intelligence from U.S. customers, he said.

"If the Chinese government approached them, why would they say no, given their system?" Johnson said.

Preventing state spying through technology is a high priority for U.S. President Barack Obama's administration, which is lobbying for legislation to raise private-sector security standards and readying a more limited executive order along those lines.

Reuters interviews with more than a dozen current and former U.S. government officials and contractors found nearly unanimous agreement that Huawei's equipment poses risks: The company could send software updates that siphon off vast amounts of communications data or shut them down in times of conflict.

More than anything else, cyber experts complained about what they said was poor programming that left Huawei equipment more open than that of rivals to hacking by government agents or third parties.

"We found it riddled with holes," said one of the people familiar with the White House review.

At a conference in Kuala Lumpur last week, Felix Lindner, a leading expert in network equipment security, said he had discovered multiple vulnerabilities in Huawei's routers.

"I'd say it was five times easier to find one in a Huawei router than in a Cisco one," Lindner said.

Lindner, who spent months investigating Huawei code, said the vulnerabilities appeared to be the result of sloppy coding and poor procedures, rather than any deliberate attempt at espionage. Huawei is looking into his findings, he said.

Some in the U.S. government, however, have said the alleged poor security practices at Huawei could be a deliberate cover for future attacks.

One computer scientist, who helped conduct classified U.S. government research on Huawei routers and switches four to six years ago, told Reuters that he had found "back doors" that his team believed were inserted with care.

He said these back doors could enable attackers to install malicious software that would make critical government networks inoperable, allow hackers to gain entry into highly classified systems and enable them to spy on all traffic. He requested anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the research.

Huawei has denied the existence of these back doors. Plummer also noted that any vendor's gear could be targeted by hackers, and the company would address any vulnerabilities it finds.

The United States' closest allies have rendered a split verdict on Huawei. Earlier this year, Australia barred Huawei from becoming a contractor on the country's National Broadband Network, and Canada said last week that Huawei could not bid to help build a secure national network. In Britain, however, a spokesman for the Cabinet Office said Huawei's products were fully vetted and did not represent a security concern.

Dutch Ruppersberger, the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee and co-author of the report, told Reuters that the burden of proof had been on Huawei and ZTE, which cited Chinese government restrictions in limiting their responses.

"China has the means, opportunity, and motive to use telecommunications companies for malicious purposes," Ruppersberger said.

Republican Rogers' staff did not respond to questions about the contents of the classified annex or the White House review.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) October 16, 2012

Over the five years to 2012, revenue for the Hand Tool Manufacturing industry is expected to grow at an annualized rate of 1.5% to roughly $ 7.8 billion, says IBISWorld industry analyst Antonio Danova. Despite this steady annualized growth, the industry has experienced significant volatility in revenue over the past five years, thanks in large part to the housing crisis in mid-2007 and the subsequent economic recession during 2008 and 2009. With fewer homeowners, the need for hand tools lessened, as construction firms cut back on projects. Moreover, as the recession struck, existing homeowners and other general consumers curtailed spending on home improvement projects and associated hand tools and other equipment. This led to losses of 9.7% and 4.0% in industry revenue in 2008 and 2009, respectively.

Nonetheless, as the economy gradually improved, the industry experienced a swift return to growth. Consumers flocked back to the market to unleash pent-up demand for buys of hand tools for home improvement projects they delayed during the recession. Additionally, growth in the huge-box retailers segment proved extremely beneficial for industry operators. While specialty retailers faltered during the downturn, huge-box retailers and other large home improvement store brands like The Home Depot and Lowe?s enticed customers with incentives. As consumers continue to buy new hand tools, the industry will experience growth of 4.3% during 2012. Overall, the Hand Tool Manufacturing industry has a low level of market share concentration. Although the industry has well-known companies Stanley Black & Decker and Snap-on, the majority of firms in the industry are small companies that operate locally or specialize in a particular type of hand tool. In the next five years, industry concentration is expected to increase slightly. During this time, the total number of enterprises is projected to fall an average of 0.6% per year to 1,010 firms. The industry is expected to consolidate as larger companies attempt to gain greater market share by purchasing smaller companies; larger companies will likely be able to expand product lines or increase their geographic scope. Additionally, companies are likely to exit the industry as operators face greater competition from imports, says Danova.

Over the next five years, the industry will start to slowly decline. A burgeoning import market will continue to cannibalize demand for domestically produced goods. Moreover, the strengthening of the dollar will make consumers more willing to buy goods produced abroad. Hand tools produced in China, Taiwan and Mexico will continue to gain steam as cheaper production costs facilitate cheaper prices for consumers. Finally, growth in input prices, such as steel, will place pressure on industry firms? bottom lines. As a result, average industry profit margins are expected to fall. To salvage some profitability, manufacturers will be forced to pass down the cost to consumers. This will hamper demand as consumers look for cheaper alternatives. With all these factors considered, IBISWorld expects industry revenue to decline over the five years to 2017. Foxconn says the iPhone 5 is the most difficult device they're ever assembled, hopes practice will make perfect

iPhone supply shortages happen almost every year, but with the iPhone 5 they've been compounded by quality assurance concerns -- namely chips and scratches occurring at the factory before the devices are as much as opened by customers. A Foxconn/Hon Hai official, who declined to be named, told Lorraine Luk of the Wall Street Journal that it's hard to satisfy both aesthetic and practical needs:

The iPhone 5 is the most difficult device that Foxconn has ever assembled. To make it light and thin, the design is very complicated. It takes time to learn how to make this new device. Practice makes perfect. Our productivity has been improving day by day.

This is nothing that anyone looking at working conditions in China and the complexity of the new iPhone assembly and finishing process couldn't reasonably deduce all on their lonesome (add your own cliche about good, fast, and cheap here).

As to rumors of a labour dispute compounded by the iPhone 5 production difficulties, the same executive waved the "stay clam, carry on" banner.

The Zhengzhou site, which was set up in 2011, is still pretty new to us. We are still learning how to manage the work force there.

Apple pushes the bleeding edge when it comes to manufacturing, inventing a lot of their own processes along the way. Quality will no doubt improve over time, whether or not it eases worker strife.

Extreme Parental Guidance: what we learned - At Home Magazine

little girl_being_naughty_18_10_12Are your misbehaving mites driving you crazy? In her most recent show, Jo Frost revealed how to deal with common parenting problems

From violent six-year-old Jack and superhero-obsessed George to fussy eater Max and frustrated Trenyce, series two of Extreme Parental Guidance saw our guest editor, Jo Frost, up against it. Tackling the behavioural issues of children with severe ? and sometimes dangerous ? conducts, she has helped distraught, distressed parents triumph over adversity, putting practical steps into place to change their lives, and their children?s, for good. Find out which lessons you can learn from Jo?s extreme parental guidance.

Is your child a problem eater?

Dinner time can prove a battlefield for families, from fussy-eating to overeating, getting your children into a healthy routine when they are young is imperative, but this is often easier said than done. In episode two, Jo met nine-year-old Max whose sole food intake revolved around custard cream biscuits. Having never eaten a vegetable or a hot meal, Max?s mum, Joanne, was, understandably, at the end of her tether. Despite introducing reward charts, games and family eating into the mix, Max would refuse to eat anything but his beloved biscuits. Similarly, five-year-old Oliver who featured in episode six had a taste for sweets and sugary foods ? including biscuits and crisps ? but, rather alarmingly, would binge on them at the crack of dawn. His sneaky eating would wake up the entire family, leaving parents Corinne and Chris sleep deprived. As well as unruly eating habits, Corinne and Chris were concerned about Oliver?s safety, too: with him often wandering around the kitchen alone, where he could easily fall or hurt himself on knives or scissors.

What Jo suggests...

? Restrict or disallow snacks: ?If your child, like Max, is guilty of snacking in between meals and then refusing to eat a proper dinner, cutting out snacks altogether will ensure he has an appetite at dinnertime. Or otherwise, restrict snacking: make sure the children understand it?s a rare treat (and should be treated as this, don?t give in to them!) ? try creating a specific snack box, for example.?

? Hold your ground: ?It can be tempting ? and easier ? to give into your children?s demands, but this allows them to take control of the situation. Don?t let them leave the table until they?ve eaten a certain amount. Give them small portions of what everyone else has to help include them in a food routine.?

Is your child violent towards you?

Violence is something that Jo witnessed again and again in the families she visited during the series. Six-year-old Jack in episode one, for instance, would regularly begin battles come bedtime, shouting, throwing things, biting and scratching both his mum, Nikkie, and his younger sister, Phoebe. And he wasn?t much better in the daytime either!

Similarly, 11-year-old Josh, in episode six, struggled with parental authority, and lashed back both verbally and physically at his father, Buster. It wasn?t just his mum and dad that bore the brunt of his aggressive attacks. His brother, Cameron, and sister, Neve, were also victims of his unruly, disruptive behaviour. As was the case for Corey, aged five, in episode five, who had a bad temper and had already winded his six-year-old sister, Alanyss, and given her a nosebleed, too. It wasn?t only the boys throwing temper tantrums, however. In episode three, Madison, youngest daughter of Sharon and Jason, constantly put her parents under fire of her rages, which involved screaming, fighting and throwing. She was also guilty of misbehaving during school, too, and attempting to play her separated parents off against each other.

What Jo suggests...

? Break the cycle: ?Putting an end to your child?s aggressive behaviour requires assertiveness. It?s essential to make it crystal clear to them that violence is in no way tolerated and by doing this, you can begin to break the cycle of bad behaviour. Clear, direct instructions (and rules) will ensure that there are no grey areas and no room for manoeuvre ? always speak in an authoritative tone so the children know exactly who is in control at all times.?

? Consistency: ?This is another crucial aspect of curbing violence. Parents need to work together and agree on consistent rules, otherwise your children will try and play you off against one another.?

? Sustain rules: ?Implementing strict rules and guidelines and making a great attempt at sticking to them is essential for tackling violent behaviour. If children break them, they need to be punished accordingly. It?s not a rule unless you enforce it consistently and prove that there are consequences to misbehaviour. Doing this will create mutual respect between you.?

? Show encouragement: ?Building up your relationship with your child and showing a genuine interest in him can help encourage good behaviour and minimise aggression. Listen to what he has to say, as well as expecting him to pay attention to you. Encourage your child to take up a new hobby, one which you can share and enjoy with him.??By offering support and praise when your child is doing well, you will spur him on to behave well.?

Does your child have an obsession?

Naturally, many children develop a fondness for a certain toy or TV programme, but what do you do if this fondness turns to obsession? This was the case in episode one with five-year-old George whose fascination with superheroes had escalated into an unhealthy obsession. His parents, Kelly and Simon, were concerned that he was struggling to differentiate between reality and fantasy; something which may have been triggered by the attention being paid to his ill younger sister, Maddie, with him searching for an escape. And so, giving George enough attention, while of course catering to Maddie?s needs, was something that Kelly and Simon needed Jo?s help with...

What Jo suggests...

? Understand your children?s needs: ?Identifying the needs of your children, no matter how different, is essential. Although one may take up more of your time than the other, you need to ensure that they both enjoy dedicated time with you.?

? Create a rota: ?In order to free-up time you perhaps didn?t realise you had, try devising a routine or rota for day-to-day activities ? from chores to bathtimes ? this will help you find gaps in your day to spend extra time with your kids.?

Is your child being bullied?

Being bullied at school can manifest in children?s home-life behaviour in a number of ways. Some retreat into solitude and stop communicating, whereas others ? like seven-year-old Trenyce, in episode two ? become aggressive at home taking out their frustration on their loved ones. Her mum, Sheryl, and younger brother, Tristen, were often the victims of her temper tantrums, and Trenyce had even started to scratch herself and cut-up her own clothes as an outlet for her aggression.

What Jo suggests...

? Talk about it: ?Chances are your child feels quite isolated, and having someone to talk to, and whom she trusts, will help her deal with her feelings rather than letting them build up inside her. Help her believe in herself, regardless of what the bullies may say to her, by building up her self-confidence.?

? Encourage her to find friends: ?If it?s a so-called friend that is doing the bullying, then encourage her to find a new group of people to spend time with. Get her to increase her circle of friends, as this will then help to boost her self-esteem while also warding off the bullies (who are much less likely to approach a larger group of people).?

Is your child a troubled sleeper?

Problem sleepers such as episode three?s six-year-old Layla, can make bedtime a nightmare for the whole family ? especially mum and dad. Due to her fear of the dark, and her bedroom, Layla would cry until she could sleep in her parent?s room, and would then be followed by two-year-old Melisa who didn?t want to miss out on some family time. Combined with the fact four-month-old Aden was already with mum and dad for night feeds, it would result in the entire family piled into one bed, resulting in a sleep-deprived mum and dad.

What Jo suggests...

? Create distance: ?Introduce periods of separation during the day ? such as when the children are playing ? to help them understand nothing bad will happen when you?re not present, and make sure they don?t have separation anxiety.?

? Introduce a sleeping routine: ?Creating a technique that you stick to will inject some much-needed structure into bedtimes, and allow the children to accept sleeping separately as part of their daily routine. Following through with this is essential though, as slipping back into bad habits will undermine all your hard work.?

Does your child have a nasty habit?

Episode four introduced Jo to Grace, a three-year-old who scratched and picked her face until it was painfully raw and bleeding. Grace persistently sucked her thumb, too. This caused her mum, Sue, to become concerned over the permanent damage she was potentially doing to her face. It?s not only Grace that?s got into bad habits though, her seven-year-old sister, Ella, also sucked her fingers ? which itself would start a chain reaction and start Grace thumb-sucking and face-picking. Despite putting Grace?s hands in mittens and using plasters to cover her sores, her parents were despairing at this damaging behaviour.

What Jo suggests...

? Relax: ?Grace?s habit may be extreme, but bad habits are very common in children as they grow up, with 60% of five- to 10-year-olds biting their nails, and 15% of four-year-olds still sucking their thumb. The majority of kids grow out of bad habits, however.?

? Talk it through: ?When your child exhibits a bad habit, simply ask her to stop it and explain why it?s not very nice. Nagging her may make the problem worse, so ask her why it is she does it, and if something?s worrying her (as it may be some kind of anxiety that triggers the habit, so be aware of it).?

Is your child rebelling against a step-parent?

Conflicting parenting styles can often show in children?s behaviour. If kids don?t witness a united front, they begin to play up and play parents off against each other. This was the case with 11-year-old Jack, Chloe, aged six and Demi, four, in episode five, whose mum, Maria, and stepdad, Scott, would constantly argue over how to parent the kids. Scott believed that Maria was pandering to the children a lot, cooking them multiple meals so that they were all happy, and tolerating all of their bad behaviour. And although the three kids viewed Maria?s warnings as empty threats, they would equally pull apart Scott?s more disciplined approach, calling him names and highlighting that he wasn?t their real dad. Which of course, created divisions and friction within the family. In addition, Jack felt that his mum spent all her time with Scott or the girls, causing him to retreat into his room and play on his games console alone.

What Jo suggests...

? Don?t rush: ?Introducing a new partner needs to be a slow and steady process and shouldn?t be taken lightly. Having a potential step-parent gradually become more involved with family activities will give the children time to adapt.?

? Make room for the kids: ?It can be easy to get distracted when a new partner is introduced into the family. But remember, it?s not only you that they?re committing to, it?s also your children ? so, building a relationship with them is crucial.?

? Show consistency: ?Dual discipline can be tricky, especially with a step parent involved, so make sure you share all your techniques and values for dealing with any sort of misbehaviour so the children don?t think there are two separate rules for everything. Doing this gradually will allow everyone to settle into the new family dynamic.?

St. Louis rolls in Game 4

Wainwright baffles S.F. batters as St. Louis takes Game 4 and leads NLCS 3-1

St. Louis'?Pete Kozma is congratulated by Daniel Descalso after scoring on an RBI double by John Jay. The Cardinals won Thursday's Game 4 of the NLCS.

ST. LOUIS - One more win and another bunch of wild-card Cardinals get their chance to repeat.

Adam Wainwright threw seven innings of four-hit ball and St. Louis roughed up Tim Lincecum and the San Francisco Giants in an 8-3 rout Thursday night that gave the Cardinals a 3-1 lead in the NL championship series.

The defending World Series champions can wrap up their second straight pennant as a wild card with a victory at home Friday night in Game 5. Lance Lynn faces Giants lefty Barry Zito, and a Cardinals win would set up a 2006 World Series rematch with Detroit.

"We've got to close them out tomorrow," Wainwright said.

Matt Holliday, Jon Jay and Yadier Molina had two RBIs apiece to lead a 12-hit outburst by a team that batted just .198 through the first three games against San Francisco.

"They had their backs against the wall against the Reds and won three in a row, so we've still got our work cut out for us and this series is by no means over," Holliday said.

Lincecum was a bust in his first postseason start since the 2010 World Series clincher over Texas, giving up four runs in 4 2-3 innings.

The two-time Cy Young Award winner with the quirky delivery earned a shot based on nearly spotless relief work earlier in the postseason but reverted to regular-season form, when he was 10-15 with a 5.18 ERA, worst among qualifying starters in the National League.

Wainwright was a glorified cheerleader while rehabbing from reconstructive elbow surgery during the Cardinals' improbable title drive last fall after earning the wild card on the final day of the season and then upsetting the favored Phillies, Brewers and Rangers to give manager Tony La Russa a chance to retire on top.

Under rookie manager Mike Matheny, the 88-win Cardinals were the final team to qualify this year, too. Once again, they've stepped up their game.

Wainwright bounced back from a poor outing in Game 5 of the NL division series against Washington, striking out five and walking none for his first postseason victory as a starter.

"It was a big motivator," he said. "I know that I'm good enough to pitch in the postseason, to carry this team deep into the game, give them a quality game, a quality outing. Last time I didn't do it but I knew tonight if I just believed in myself and went out there and executed pitches I would be in good shape."

The lone damage against Wainwright came on Hunter Pence's first homer and RBI of the postseason, a second-inning clout estimated at 451 feet that soared over the visitor's bullpen into the left-center bleachers to cut the Cardinals' lead to 2-1.

Now, the 14-game winner is on the verge of his first World Series as an active player since striking out Brandon Inge as the stand-in closer for injured Jason Isringhausen in the 2006 clincher over the Tigers.

"This whole experience is so special as it is," Wainwright said. "But to get back to that World Series is always the way to go."

Holliday wasn't surprised by Wainwright's strong performance.

"You expect Adam to pitch well and pitch like an ace, and he did," Holliday said. "His curveball was really good. He located his fastball. No surprise. We all expect Adam to pitch the way he pitched tonight, but sometimes things like the Washington game happen. But he's tough as nails. We knew he'd pitch well."

Just 12 pitches in, the Cardinals had two hits and the lead, and Lincecum got a visit from pitching coach Dave Righetti. Jay opened the first with a single, Matt Carpenter walked on four pitches and Holliday singled up the middle for the lead. Allen Craig tacked on a sacrifice fly.

"I've just been working on my swing and I felt more comfortable tonight," Holliday said. "I was able to get some pitches to hit and hit them hard and good results, that always helps the confidence."

Lincecum escaped trouble in the second after issuing two more walks, one of them on five pitches to Wainwright. The Cardinals missed a chance to add on after Pete Kozma reached on third baseman Pablo Sandoval's fielding error to open the inning when he was thrown out trying to steal.

Lincecum had retired eight in a row before running into trouble in the fifth.

Carpenter doubled off the top of the wall in right-center with one out. He held up until Holliday's single fell in front of fast-charging center fielder Angel Pagan, but third base coach Jose Oquendo aggressively waved Carpenter home.

The relay from shortstop Brandon Crawford was in time, but it short-hopped catcher Hector Sanchez and Carpenter scored on a headfirst slide to make it 3-1. Molina's two-out RBI single made it 4-1 and was the knockout blow for Lincecum.

"He gave us all he had out there," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "That was his last inning and he was close to getting out of that inning. He made a great effort on that ball and good throw. We had him at home plate and it's still 2-1. That's a big play in the game."

Pence, who called himself "the goat" of Game 3 after stranding seven runners, hit the second-longest home run by an opposing player at 7-year-old Busch Stadium with a 451-foot drive that sailed over the visitor's bullpen into the bleachers in left-center.

Holliday's RBI single was the first by a Cardinals starter since Carlos Beltran's two-run homer in the fourth inning of Game 1. Holliday entered 2 for 12 in the NLCS with no RBIs.

Sandoval hit a two-run homer in the ninth, but the NL West champs are on the brink of elimination.

"We have all the confidence in Barry," Bochy said. "We do need to get the bats going. They've been shutting us down."

Allergies, Stuffy Nose, Colds and Snoring | ArticlePDQ.com

When your spouse makes it a bit uneasy for you to sleep at night because of his occasional rumblings, you need to find a way to stop the loud and grating noise. After all, the most adverse side effect of snoring is lack of sleep which can lead to daytime fatigue and increased health problems. Aside from that, snoring may also strain your relationship.

So where should you start?

The first thing you need to know to reduce or eliminate snoring is finding the cause. For some people, snoring is not a major concern because it can be caused of blocked or narrowed passageways due to allergies, colds and sinusitis.

There are two scenarios here, breathing through a stuffed nose and breathing through the mouth. As the air travels much faster in narrowed nasal passages, the air eventually hits the soft palate tissue and the uvula causing it to vibrate. These vibrations in turn create the snoring sounds.

On the other hand, a stuffy nose can also lead you to breathe through your mouth. Under normal circumstances, your nose acts as a muffler when you accidentally breathe through your mouth during sleep. Thus, when your nose is blocked or stuffy, the muffler effect drops off which makes the breathing sound much louder!

How to reduce or eliminate snoring

Fortunately, snoring due to allergies, colds and stuffy nose can be easily remedied. There are many anti-snoring products that can reduce or eliminate snoring of this type. Take a look at the following products.

Breathe Right Tan-Nature Nasal Strips

These are flexible spring-like pieces that gently lift the nasal passages open while a special adhesive holds the strip comfortably in place. They provide temporary relief from nasal congestion and stuffiness. Plus, these nasal strips are safe and are drug-FREE.

NasalCrom Nose Spray

The NasalCrom Nose Spray contains an active ingredient Cromolyn sodium that shrinks the mucosal by blocking the veins in the back and top sinuses of the nose. However, you need to apply it for 6 hours and application should not be longer than four days.

NasiVent Tube Nose Dilator

The Nasivent Tube Nose Dilator can eliminate snoring due to weakened nostrils. It is the only nose dilator tested and recommended by E.N.T doctors in Europe. It is made of silicone making it safe, comfortable and a non-irritable device. It comes in four different sizes to help you find the perfect fit, thus eliminating pressure and slipping out of the nose while sleeping.
