Laguna Creek High School takes home top awards at 2012 SMUD Northern California Solar Regatta
Students in Laguna Creek High School?s Green Energy Technology Academy (GETA) took home three of the top awards at the 2012 SMUD (Sacramento Municipal Utilities Agency) Northern California Solar Regatta on Friday, May 18 at Rancho Seco Lake.
Laguna Creek entered two teams in the competition, the ?junior? team and the ?senior? team.? The ?junior? team won the slalom and speed races.? By finishing first in these races, the ?junior? team amassed the highest point total for the day and took home the Regatta Cup.? The award-winning ?junior? team consisted of the following students: Molly Kelly, Santana Marin, Andy Panuschka and Kerstin Wallinger.?
The SMUD Northern California Solar Regatta is a water race that invites teams of students in grades 7-12 to design, build and compete with solar-powered boats.? Each student team is mentored by an educator or other school administrator.? During the school year, students were loaned solar modules to design and build the boats.? On race day, students competed in sprint, distance and slalom races.? Students also received awards for creativity, design and efficiency of their boats.
?I am extremely proud of our students? accomplishments at this event,? said Eric Johnson, a science teacher at Laguna Creek and co-coordinator for GETA.? ?With the help of Gerhard Panuschka, a parent of one of our students, both teams spent countless hours constructing, sanding, finishing and testing the boat.? They also learned a great deal in regards to the design and integration of the boat?s power management system.? The students are already planning for next year?s event and we hope that more teams step up to the challenge next year.?
The GETA Academy is designed for students interested in green energy. GETA?students explore the concepts of energy extraction, conversion and transmission processes through complex, hands-on, project-based work. Depending on their post secondary plans,?students who graduate from the Green Energy Technology Academy will be prepared to enter two or four institutions of study, a technical training program or go directly to work in the Energy Sector.
The 2012 Northern California Solar Regatta was sponsored by SMUD and the San Joaquin Office of Education.? Click here for more information about the SMUD Solar Regatta.
